Chapter Ten

“She said I couldn’t use a hairbrush,” I moaned into the phone that evening. Sophie and I had a standing once-weekly FaceTime call, and we’d already been through all of the recent events. I needed to shift to something slightly less life and death.

“Mom, there’s all kinds of stuff on TikTok about how to take care of your curls. You need to look there.”

I let out a moan. “I don’t want to.”

“Then embrace the frizz, I guess. Or ask Gramma.”

Ask Hazel, not because she also had developed curly hair… but because my 90-year-old grandmother understood TikTok. Hazel had definitely mastered the platform. I’d caught her recently talking to her phone and figured out that she was filming a video.”

“I’m a content creator,” she’d told me. “There are tons of women out there who want to learn how to live a simple life on a homestead like we do.”

I’d frowned at my grandmother. “Hazel, the Amazon truck shows up here almost daily. We are not homesteading. We are very much on the grid.”

“But we could be,” she had said, waving a finger at me. “And my followers don’t need to know all the details.”

“How is school, honey?” I asked my daughter.

Sophie was silent a long moment, and she rolled over, adjusting the screen in front of her as she lay on her stomach on her dorm room bed. “It’s okay.”

“You know that answer will not suffice. Especially after a pause like that one.”

She laughed, but my pretty daughter’s face didn’t actually smile. “It’s harder than I thought.”

“The classes?”

“No, just… being here.”

I nodded. “I understand.”

“No, I don’t mean like, being away. That’s not a big deal. Not like I miss you. That isn’t what I mean.”

“Well, thanks for that.” Ouch.

“I mean… of course I miss you a little. It’s just. Mom, is there way to just turn it all off?”

I frowned, hating the creases on my forehead as I stared into the little screen where my own face peered back from the corner. “Turn it off. What?”

“The magic?”

Oh dear. “No, honey. You can’t turn it off. You have to learn to control it.”

“I didn’t ask for this.”

None of us had. “I know. But it’s a gift, Soph, it really is.”

“Tell that to my roommate. She thinks I’m a total freak.”

“Why?”

“I was upset yesterday. That guy, Josh. He said he thought we were best as friends…”

“Oh, honey.” Friend-zoned. It was the worst.

“I mean, it’s whatever. But I was mad at first, right? And I was thinking about it a lot, and Jenn has this plant in the windowsill, and it just started kind of wilting and dying when I was looking at it, and then…”

I could picture it - Sophie’s green magic flowing out of her and latching onto the closest subject it could affect.

“And then it burst into flames.”

Oh no. That was harder to imagine.

“And I didn’t want her to see—she was facing the other way. So I picked it up and stuffed it upside down into the nearest thing I could find.
